Grunion Population Count

The eagerly anticipated annual season of the grunion is at hand. As you know, these beautiful fish are best viewed during their spectacular spawning runs on sandy California beaches. In the past few years I've been working with volunteers to assess grunion populations in San Diego using a web-based interactive data questionnaire. This year we are expanding to sites along the coast all the way to Santa Barbara and beyond.

We ask volunteers to attend a short, fun workshop where they will receive instructions and some free goodies. They sign up to attend one or more of 10 night runs on specific beaches during April, May, and early June. They fill out and submit the web data form within 24 hours.

We are holding 6 workshops in the following locations:

  1. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, San Pedro: March 22, 8 pm

  2. Santa Barbara Channel Keepers, South Coast Watershed Resource Center: March 24, 6 pm

  3. Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla: March 25, 6:30 pm

  4. Pepperdine University, Malibu: March 30, 6:30 pm

  5. Heal The Bay, Santa Monica Pier Aquarium: April 1, 6:30 pm

  6. Surfrider Foundation, Orange County: Oasis Senior Center, Corona Del Mar, April 5, 6:30 pm

We ask for RSVP so we bring enough clipboards and snax for everyone, but we encourage people to come even if they can't schedule it in advance. See the website, www.grunion.org for more info.

Please feel free to forward this to any interested parties; thank you for your assistance and good thoughts.

All best fishes,

Karen
