Question 3: Recognizing the natural coastal processes, what solutions would enhance protection of the beach and park?

 

GROUP 1

  • Natural protection with dune restoration

  • Open up another channel of slough at the west end of Goleta Beach to deposit sand from the slough down coast

  • Managed retreat moving parking behind the 217 (to a non-endangered (?) habitat) and moving the park back, filling in with sand.

  • Revetment with sand nourishment

  • Combination of managed retreat, moved parking, new slough channel on west end revetment and beach nourishment.

GROUP 2
  • Re-locate utilities further away from the coast to remove incentive for hard solutions

  • Managed retreat

  • Hard solutions have more impacts than benefits-especially down coast

GROUP 3
  • Long term studies on revetments that work

  • More studies on opening western slough

  • Impacts of letting park go

  • Effects of chlorine on the kelp beds

GROUP 4
  • Buried revetments

  • Open creeks and rivers upstream

  • Beach nourishment

  • Reestablish kelp beds

  • Move recreation components east and north, and allow west end to be improved for natural habitat

GROUP 5

  • Rock revetment and beach nourishment

  • Reef

  • Manage retreat

  • Open 2nd sough mouth-natural beach nourishment

  • Re-establish kelp beds

  • Prevent revetment and remove current ones, 0 groins

  • Dune enhancement and plant stabilization

  • Look up coast-where is our sand going???

  • Take out “revetment” at UCSB

  • Work with other organizations statewide to prevent blocking of stream and rivers along coast

  • Alternative parking/transportation

  •  Watershed from up coast
