WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST?

  1. Love setting with grass, trees, family amenities, and ambiance.

  2. Accessibility-ease of getting there, parking, no parking fees.

  3. It’s free.

  4. “I like its whole ‘song”-1,000 things to do and see

  5. Big, wide sandy beach.

  6. Convenient distance to home and work.

  7. Blue heron rookery-natural resources

  8. Low-income people-whole recreation without great expense.

  9. Great place to walk.

  10. Ambiance and walking opportunity-adjacent to UCSB (long, connected walk) + other areas.

  11. (Biking)-Scenery is spectacular + wildlife you see.

  12. Natural resource “crap shoot”-never know what you’ll see-surprising

  13. Progression & succession of environments-offers so much to so many people.

  14. “Cause its there.”

  15. Outstanding restaurant, convenient parking & beautiful sunsets.

  16. Pier-great access for fishing & boating; length is great & view-shore.

  17. If mobility problems-good access.

  18. World-class grunion run.

  19. Interaction between Goleta Slough, watershed & Goleta Beach.

  20. Convenient location for groups, camps, etc., has facilities.

  21. Easy access for kayaking.

  22. Safe, accessible, addresses needs of all age groups.

  23. History-what Goleta once was, Native Americans, deep-water port, and schooners. Connection to mountains and watershed.

  24. Park at beach, and when there is sand at beach like the volleyball courts.

  25. Priceless.

  26. Easy to access water for swimming.

  27. Coastal experience year round.

CONCERNS

  1. Lack of progress-seems similar to previous meetings.

  2. Need to do something immediately. Should complete revetment across entire beachfront. Hope near-term plan to incorporate something long term. Afraid won’t be anything left.

  3. Preserving natural ecosystems in area.

  4. Risking losing park if don’t protect it.

  5. Risking losing sandy beach if don’t protect it.

  6. Risking losing recreational asset.

  7. Inflexible or unwilling to see other options.

  8. Unintended consequences on or off site.

  9. Growing cost of continued studies and delays on ultimate project.

  10. Need to study before take action.

  11. Do something.

  12. If don’t save park and beach now, won’t have anything for Beacon, etc. to help us.

  13. West end parking lot impacted by large trucks and effect of UCSB parking. Shame University won’t cooperate. Enforcement.

  14. Perceived misconception, what to do to save park must also save sandy beach. I think separate. “Time and tide waits for no one.”

  15. Moving way too slow. Not rocket science. Suggest jetty. Sand brought in will wash away.

  16. Complexity of site will make it difficult to solve.

  17. Over reliance on engineering solutions.

  18. Some think more complex than rocket science. Natural resource values underline most of concerns expressed.

  19. Approach and study seems trying to solve international beach erosion problem-not needed for Goleta Beach.

  20. Forgetting about people-most used by families and lower income people.

  21. Supervisor Rose’s panel-UCSB professor said “Technology not a problem. Decide.” Susan Rose- “We as community have a choice. A question of values!”

  22. County leadership role good, but regional nature of issue, need cities of SB, Goleta and UCSB to participate.

  23. Economic-tourism is important to visitors, important to community. Tie to Old Town.

  24. Main mechanical cause of erosion-tree trunks, etc., after storms. Debris clean up post storms would help. Chain reaction.

  25. How much space-parking at Goleta beach County Park. Explore alternative methods.

  26. Lack of sand-beach. Regional watershed perspective.

  27. Not enough participants Moffatt & Nichol-e.g. UCSB, So. Cal. Gas, City of Goleta, especially regarding utilities.

  28. We study things to death. Make a decision.

  29. Goleta slough and Goleta beach dynamic

  30. Cost to relocate utilities-economics

  31. Projects increasing sewer outfall.

  32. Save park so can discuss other stuff in casual way.

BETTER PLACE FOR RECREATION

  1. Solution contributes to access-beach from park year round (not so now in winter).

  2. View GBCP-larger area (both sides of slough mouth) and develop goals for resource protections and measurements to monitor.

  3. Catalog environmental condition over time, carrying capacity and what we need to do to sustain.

  4. Build stairs over/thru rocks so more usable in winter.

  5. Bike racks to encourage bike riding.

  6. Jetty (groins) and breakwater, or offshore rocks.

  7. Create 2nd slough mouth-interpretive opportunity.

  8. Interpretive display/info of history.

  9. Expand park/recreation area.

  10. Maintain population of marine invert-sand crabs food for birds, fish, etc. Concern sand deposition interferes. Careful where sand is dumped.

  11. Widen sandy beach-active-passive recreation and natural resource enhancement.

  12. Don’t take away what’s there. Add to it.

  13. Shuttle system (e.g., Devil’s Postpile).

  14. Enhance natural resource as part of recreational experience.

NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

  1. Enhance natural resources.

  2. Protect sandy beach (and water) to protect park.

  3. More interpretive centers/info.

  4. Consider measures to reduce/eliminate pollution-park maintenance and management.

  5. Constraints map and calendar for natural resources to minimize impacts.

  6. More soft scape, high beach and dune habitat.

  7. Restore historical connection between slough and Goleta beach.

  8. Set measurable goals and timetable.

  9. Biology consultant’s involvement.

COASTAL PROCESS SOLUTIONS BEACH AND PARK

  1. Revetments where needed to buy time.

  2. 2nd slough mouth at west end-sand onto Goleta Beach.

  3. Kelp offshore reforestation-place rocks or whatever so they’ll root.

  4. Understand coastal processes.

  5. Soft solutions, e.g., beach nourishment. Maybe high beach idea, which could supply sand during storms.

  6. Buried revetment, beach nourishment (e.g. FC dredging of creek)-short term while looking at long term solutions.

  7. Removal of large debris on beach and sources of debris.

  8. Consideration of offshore reefs.

  9. Least extensive engineering solution (impacts) to achieve what we want for beach and park.

  10. Model for other jurisdictions, especially given complexities.

  11. Ca Res. Agency studying erosion management up and down state-all watching closely.

  12. Know more of what’s going on, as have 100 years of history.

  13. Effect of kelp beds. Farm kelp?
